The Mental Health and Education Resource Center (MHERC) for Children & Adolescents was established to disseminate quality information to families, educators and health professionals. The MHERC is conceptually organized around two primary domains: 1) mental health and 2) educational programs. The primary mission of MHERC is to provide high quality information in an easily accessible format, with minimal use of jargon or highly technical language. This information currently covers four areas: alternative schooling, anxiety and mood disorders, eating disorders, and child psychopharmacology.
MHERC is the result of the merger of two information centers previously located in separate departments of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Child Psychopharmacology Information Service (CPIS), located in Departmentof Psychiatry at the UW Medical School, operated for nearly a decade, during which time staff provided critical information to researchers, mental health professionals, and families having questions about the use of psychatric medications in children. The Educational and Psychological Training Center (EPTC) of UW-Madison's School of Education, with the support of a generous donor, was able to expand its services in 1997 to establish the MHERC. Recognizing the interconnection between mental health and education issues, the two units merged in 1999 to form the MHERC, thereby enhancing the ability to disseminate essential information on child mental health, and schooling issues.
