What Are Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are widely recognized as among the most common disorders affecting children and adolescents. Although fears and worries that come and go are part of normal childhood development, persistent or severe anxiety can significantly impair a child's functioning and cause great suffering. Impairment typically results from avoidance behaviors such as missing school, withdrawing from friends and family, and a progressive constriction of personal activities and interests. The MHERC provides information about the following childhood anxiety and related disorders: Separation Anxiety Disorder, Specific Phobia, Social Phobia, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Selective Mutism, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Tourette's Syndrome.
