Alternative Schooling: Having options regarding alternative schooling
has become increasingly important within the educational environment of
the United States.
The Alternative Schooling Information Service (ASIS) of the MHERC
is collecting and organizing information about schools providing an alternative
to a standard public school education. This information includes private
and residential schools, and alternative programs and curriculum within
the public school system. The purpose of ASIS is to provide accurate and
helpful information about the alternative school options available within
the United States. However, we encourage you to search our database by clicking
on the "alternative schooling" button to the left. (See Parent Page)
Anxiety and Mood Disorders: Childhood anxiety disorders represent
some of the major mental health problems of youth in the United States.
Furthermore, there is strong evidence that anxiety disorders may actually
be on the increase. The MHERC , through the Anxiety Disorders Information Service
(ADIS) section, provides information about agoraphobia, acute stress disorder,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic-disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder,
school phobia, selective mutism, and social phobia. Information on each
of these disorders includes psychosocial treatment (such as behavior therapy,
or individual counseling) as well as information on the appropriate use
of medications (see CPIS below). This section of the MHERC is still being
developed.
Eating Disorders: Eating disorders account for a significant number
of child and adolescent problems. With funding assistance from the McKnight
Foundation, MHERC staff has recently established the Eating Disorders Information
Service (EDIS), and has secured a wide range of resources on the diagnosis,
assessment, prevention, and treatment of eating disorders. These include
anorexia, bulimia, and related problems. In addition, the MHERCCA has information
on school-based curricula available for use within public and private school
settings. We are currently seeking additional funding to expand this section
of the MHERC .
Child Psychopharmacology: The Child Psychopharmacology Information
Service (CPIS) section of the MHERC provides information on the use of
medications to treat psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents.
The CPIS provides literature search services for medical and education professionals,
and publishes two informational guidebooks that discuss issues related to
child psychopharmacology. These are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder: A Medication Guide and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder In Children
and Adolescents: A Guide.
